About the Latvia's State Forests Nature Park in Tērvete

The origin of the Latvia's State Forests Nature Park in Tērvete can be traced back to 1958, when the first walking trails were created in the current Sun Mood Park. Today, the nature park covers the area of more than 1,200 ha, one third of which is occupied by the Fairytale World.

Since 2000, when the park has been managed by the JSC “Latvia's State Forests”, large infrastructure improvement works have been carried out. We can safely say that it would require at least three hours to visit the park.

The literary contribution of Anna Brigadere, one of the most famous Latvian writers, a bright playwright and a poet, can be felt throughout the territory of the park. Therefore, the traditional part of the park is named the land of Sprīdītis  – the main character of  Anna Brigadere's fairy tale “The Tale of Sprīdītis”. Here you will find the wooden sculptures depicting the fairy-tale characters from the works written by the writer Anna Brigadere: Sprīdītis and the giant Lutausis, the Forest King and his court, little Annele with her friends, as well as “alive” fairy-tale characters. If you want to take a great photo from Tērvete, you know – Lutausis and Sprīdītis can be found on the left bank of the Tērvete River, up the stairs from the Amusement Square. The Latvia's State Forests Nature Park in Tērvete includes several thematic sections.In the Dwarf Forest you can walk around the Dwarf Village with small wooden houses and thematic yards, the Dwarf Town “Cones” with bright houses and cobbled streets, climb the big wooden watch tower and meet the dwarves of Tērvete in the Dwarf Yard. The trails here are suitable for wheelchair users and parents with prams.

Various wooden sculptures can still be seen in the Fairytale Forest, including one of the oldest wooden sculptures in the park –  the King of the Forest. Here you can see the king's court, the guard and other sculptures made of wood. Right near, in the Witch's Pinewood, you can meet the inhabitants of the pinewood – bats, spiders, the devil and the Little Witch. 

In the Amusement Square, you can walk along the obstacle trails,  the Sprīdītis and Lutausis trails, wander the paths of the wooden maze and find out the greatness of the wooden castle. Lutausis and Sprīdītis can be met on the bank of the Tērvete River. There is also a rest area with benches, tables and awnings, where you can enjoy your meal.

A large thematic sector that is still growing and developing is the Land of Kurbads. Here, the visitors who have grown out of the world of Sprīdītis – youngsters – can find their adventure in the forest.

The Tērvete Skills Bike Park with various elevations, bends, footbridges and bridges – almost 3 km long – was built in the Land of Kurbads. In addition, the objects built by the cooperation partners have been established in this territory – the Tērvete Tarzan Park, the Tērvete Net Park and the Tērvete Butterfly Tropical House.

In the area of about 400 ha of the landscaped territory it is easy to reach the attractions for pedestrians, cyclists, families with prams and people with disabilities. The park offers a variety of opportunities: to ride in the Fairytale train, to rent baby carriages and bicycles, to climb the wooden watch tower or to go for longer walks exploring the further parts of the park – the Old Pine Park, the Green Classroom or the scenic surroundings of the Swan Bridge. In the building of the Tourist Information Centre of the Latvia's State Forests Nature Park in Tērvete there are seminar halls, ticket office, information centre, cafe and comfortable toilets. There are souvenir kiosks next to the information centre building.

A picnic area with a grill, benches and tables has also been created next to the building in the centre of the park. We invite you to book it in advance by calling the information centre in the Tērvete Nature Park. It is also possible to use the free picnic areas located in the large parking lot of the nature park.

The Latvia's State Forests Nature Park in Tērvete has been recognized as the most outstanding European tourist destination in Latvia within the framework of the EDEN project.
