In May, the contest “Release the Mother!” received eight valid applications. There have not been any large perch trophies yet, however, the total length of pike that was caught and released reaches 5.25 metres. We are happy to see “Release the Mother!” friends from previous season, and also new participants – Oskars Gudevics and Valerijs Masko.
The largest catch of May, and also of this new season – the 86 centimetres long pike from the LVM Gulbju Lake caught by Juris Bārtulis was a pleasant surprise for the angler. Juris from Talsi on a sunny and windy day of 23 May caught three more pikes, but none of them were that big.
The largest “Release the Mother!” 2nd season's surprise was the pike application of Normunds Ikomass on 20 May from LVM Lake Kaņieris. The photo taken by angler shows a 72 centimetres long fish that looks surprisingly similar to the one that was in Staņislavs Pinka application on 13 May. It also was caught in the only allowed territory of Lake Kaņieris.
After consulting with scientists, it was concluded that fish in both applications have “twinlike” similarities, and there is a big probability that both anglers have caught the same pike with one week interval.
Pike are territorial and aggressive fish – after recovering from one capture they, after a while, will attack lure again. Staņislavs succeeded using a wobbler, but Normunds – a jerk lure. However, scientific conclusions cannot be made by similarities visible photos. In this case, pike should be tagged. Despite all that, the judges of “Release the Mother!” has decided that both of these applications has the same pike, for that reason, the winners of second largest pike of May are both anglers. However, the nomination for the third largest pike goes to another pike caught by Normunds – a 68 centimetres long pike.
All participants were angling in LVM lakes on a sunny weather and the quality of their success they evaluated quite differently – from 1 to 8 points. The largest number of applications came from LVM Lake Kaņieris (five applications), two came from LVM Lake Lielauce, and one, the biggest at the moment – from LVM Gulbju Lake. The applications of May show that pike in LVM lakes have not been very picky and were caught on rotating lures, plastic lures, wobblers and jerk lures.
We remind, that contest “Release the Mother!” will continue until 30 November in all lakes managed by the LVM – LVM Lake Kaņieris, LVM Lake Lielauce, LVM Gulbju Lake and Tērvete Reservoir. For more information and for application form look www.mammadaba.lv.
Each month, in collaboration with LVM, Salmo, Lucky John, Eboat.lv, Rapala and Anglers Studio, we will award three anglers for their applications of longest pike (starting from 50 centimetres) and for two longest perch (starting from 36 centimetres). The winners of Honorary Fisherman badges of the May will be contacted by the organisers of “Release the Mother!”.
Fish that are caught and released correctly continue to live, grow and bring joy to anglers.
