When spending time on a slow walks at the LVM Kalsnava arboretum, it is possible to see many interesting and rare trees. They are hiding under snow cover, creating trees of unusual shape. At the moment the blooming American witch-hazel is bringing joy to our visitors.
The American witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) at the LVM Kalsnava Arboretum is a 2.5 metres high deciduous shrub, which has been grown from seeds that in year 1982 were received from the University of Bratislava in Slovakia. It was planted in a place sheltered from winds and usually blooms right after leaves are shed – in October. If the weather is stable then blooming can last rather long time. American witch-hazel blooms regularly and in favourable conditions – next year's autumn – seeds ripen.
Blooming American witch-hazel
In wilderness American witch-hazel grows in north-east part of North America, where American Indians used their leaves and buds’ bark as medicament, because it has an antibacterial effect. Also nowadays the active substances of witch-hazel are used in production of homoeopathic medicaments and cosmetic products.
We welcome you to enjoy the colourful winter atmosphere in the LVM Kalsnava Arboretum!
