IT MEANS MOTHER NATURE.

AND IT’S TRUE.

Clean-up for houses of small birds

In the framework of JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” educational programme “Learning About Forests”, in early spring, in the afternoon of 4th March, 4th and 5th grade students of Tērvete region Anna Brigadere Elementary School took part in cleaning works of birdhouses of the small forest birds at the LVM Nature Park in Tērvete. As March is also called the month of snow crust or month of pigeons, it is known, that it is the last moment clean out birdhouses, so that they could meet their new residents in their best shape.

The determined and energetic little nature friends carried ladder on their shoulders, at the same time managed to carry hammers and notebooks, and with a quick pace went to search for birdhouses in the pine tree forest. More than 30 birdhouses were examined, evaluated and cleaned, discussing the residents of birdhouses – European pied flycatcher, great tit, Eurasian nuthatch, and to everyone’s surprise, also a wood mouse. Also notes were put down and new knowledge was obtained.

With a great satisfaction, a little bit tired, but smiling, the energetic and friendly students went home. However, on their way back home, the joy of the accomplished work was palpable in the air, because some of the birdhouses were pretty high in trees, but with a determined and persistent teamwork – both the small group and the large group examined all of the birdhouses found. When breathing in fresh air of the ancient pine forest, a thought comes into mind – you are never too small to do big works!

For several years LVM Nature Park in Tērvete provides opportunities to not only build birdhouses, but also set them up in the most popular tourism destination in Latvia and to join the public spring clean-up events. Soon visitors of the LVM Nature Park in Tērvete will be welcomed with songs – with the awaking of nature, more than 120 bird species will show off their singing voices.
