IT MEANS MOTHER NATURE.

AND IT’S TRUE.

White-tailed eagle sets a record in LVM Nature Park in Tērvete

Each year the LVM Nature Park in Tērvete is visited by more and more guests that now can be counted in thousands. But the impressive number of people is not an obstacle for rare and protected bird species to establish their nests here, for example, the white-tailed eagle.

In this spring, thousands of geese took a stop in the Tērvete Reservoir during the spring migration. Amongst them also white-tailed eagles were seen actively hunting for prey. A nest that was inhabited by a family of white-tailed eagles was noticed during an inspection of the park.

Ornithologist Jānis Ķuze, in the framework of annual monitoring, came to inspect the nest in the territory of LVM Nature Park in Tērvete at the evening of 23 May with a hope that it would be occupied. At the inspection time, the nest was occupied by two healthy, around five weeks old white-tailed eagle new birds with a small height difference. Both of white-tailed eagle babies were ringed.

The nest of white-tailed eagle in LVM Nature Park in Tērvete is the highest nest of this species found in Latvia – 34.4 metres. Up until now the highest nests (both 31.6 metres) were found in region of Skrunda and in the territory of Ķemeri National Park.

When climbing up the pine to the nest, around the halfway, a nest hole of black woodpecker was noticed, a stock dove had created its nest there.

Meza balodis

Currently stock dove is actively nesting its two eggs.

The nest of white-tailed eagle in LVM Nature Park in Tērvete is one of the very rare known nests of this species and is a real rarity in Zemgale region.
