IT MEANS MOTHER NATURE.

AND IT’S TRUE.

Scots pine – the treasure of LVM Nature Park in Tērvete

The first landscaping works in the LVM Nature Park in Tērvete were started in the year 1958 in a guidance of Miķelis Kļaviņš, who saw the potential of the scrubby at that time, but, nevertheless, picturesque pine forest. At some point, a pine with a 40 m height was recorded in the Nature Park in Tērvete. Without a doubt, the finest, oldest and tallest pines of Latvia can be seen here today as well!

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is one of the four most common coniferous tree species in Latvia and one of the most important species in forestry. Scots pine is also one of the longest living trees in Latvia. Pine is one of the genetically oldest tree species, whose origin dates back 150 million years. The oldest living pines in LVM Nature Park in Tērvete reach 200 to 300 years of age. One can only imagine what unusual and historical events the outstanding pines of Tērvete have witnessed.

It is no wonder why after a walk in pine forest you can hear a phrase – that air has a different “taste”! Pine releases phytoncides –biologically active compounds that are antibacterial.  Thus, after a walk in pine forest one can not only increase self healing, but active recreation in nature strengthens also the physical health. Pine's aroma works as a refreshing and toning remedy and also reduces stress levels. From time to time it is useful to put lightly squeezed pine needles around the house, thus, distributing the aroma.

Many of the pines growing in the Nature Park in Tērvete have an excellent feature – particularly straight stem – those are called the Riga pines. During the period of sailing ships, poles for spars were searched in Baltic forests. Maybe some spars were created from a pine that has been selected in the forests of Tērvete.

It is no wonder that Scots pine is named the tree of the year 2017! Scots pine can be proud of its ancient origin, it has a long life, excellent wood properties and wide range of possible uses.

The LVM Nature Park in Tērvete invites to educational lessons in the specially created Green Classroom or to go on an active hike in the less known locations of the pine forest in the framework of environmental education programme “Learning about Forests!”. Enjoy a walk in pine forest and breath in deep the air of a forest! After a 2-2.5 hour hike in fresh air, your sandwiches and sausages cooked on a fire will taste divine! The LVM Nature Park in Tērvete is very proud of its pine forest. Hurrah for the tree of the year 2017!
