IT MEANS MOTHER NATURE.

AND IT’S TRUE.

British teachers draw inspiration in LVM Nature Park in Tērvete

DSC 1496

At the end of October the LVM Nature Park in Tērvete was visited by 15 teachers from the United Kingdom to draw inspiration to their own environmental education activities.

In the first part of the day guests listened to the specialists of JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” (LVM) about their experience with environmental education programmes in Latvia – Pigman's Detectives, Mammadaba Masterclass, LVM Forest Expeditions, etc. As most of the teachers work with preschool age children then special attention was received about the Pigman's Detectives’ programme, which has been made in collaboration with the National Centre for Education and the Administration of Latvian Environmental Protection Fund. Already during the lecture exchange of experiences could be heard about how this programme could be adapted for British children, and also ideas for creating a captivating character.

When visiting the park, the main interests of teachers were the planning of curriculum and giving lessons outside of school premises using materials available in nature, that is why guests were invited to participate in a “Green Classroom” lesson lead by the education specialists of Nature Park. In the lesson everyone is introduced with the life cycle of forest, animals living in it, ways how to determine the height and age of a tree, and also other interesting facts.

When doing the tasks given by specialists, teachers discovered that many of them don’t know not only trees of Latvia, but also tree species that are characteristic in United Kingdom. It evoked a deep discussion about the need to create an environmental education programme also for teachers and other adults that would be interested.

LVM carries out environmental education programmes that are adapted for age groups starting from preschool age until university students. LVM also carries out further education courses for teachers.
