Students of Ogre Technical College have returned with excellent results and 3rd place from the international competition "Young People in European Forests", which took place in Busteni, Romania.
After passing the candidate selection and proving their knowledge about European forests in spring, students Marta Svalbone, Matiss Murnieks, and Ilmars Ansons, as well as their teacher Antons Seleznovs traveled to Romania in outumn.

This year, in continuation of the previous year, students were split up into 11 mixed international teams that consisted of 3 students, each from a different country.
During the finals, students had to prove their knowledge about all European forests by answering 50 questions. They had to go into the forest, orientate themselves, and find control checkpoints to solve various tasks related to forest management and natural protection. The toughest task of all included 11 themes on forest management, diversity and problems that can be encountered in European forests. Students were given two days to find the necessary materials and prepare a poster on the theme given. The posters featured various themes, such as Nature2000 territories, European forest certification, protected animal species, use of forest resources, bioenergy, and other interesting developments.
Third place: Eduard Cecris (Romania), Maria Ječo Cruto (Portugal) un Marta Svalbone (Latvia).
Marta Svalbone, a student from Ogre Technical College, together with Portuguese and Romanian representatives, took 3rd place. Matiss Murnieks and Ilmars Ansons – received appreciation certificates, and new experience, also more extensive knowledge about European forests, and pride in one's country.
Young People in Forests is the largest forest and forest management competition for European students - held for the fourth time. Participating in the competition were students from 11 countries – Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Ukraine, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, and Romania. The national candidate selection for the competition was organized by JSC "Latvian State Forests" in collaboration with Ogre Technical College. Ogre Technical College students, who began the 2014/2015 academic year and were in the age group of 13-20 years, were allowed to apply for the national candidate selection that took place in June 2015.
