While the little pilot project of Latvian winter has left angling society in uncertainty – to sharpen their ice augers or to be patient, the “Release the Mother!” has summed up the catches that has been caught and gently released in the first months of autumn – September and October.

“During coldest nights, we put boats a bit farther from water, but all in all, according to the prognoses of forecasters, we wait for a cyclone which will bring warmer air and will make our lakes accessible to anglers once again,” says Kristaps Didže, manager of Park Department of “LVM Recreation and hunting”. Though, weather forecasts promise a thaw on this weekend already – it is a reason to go to waters!

Firstly, we have to mention that in the first two months of autumn an increasing interest about the initiative of gentle fishing has been observed. 12 anglers, few of them now are active participants, altogether have sent in applications about 7.75 metres of released fish. The average size of fish, in comparison to applications of summer months, is a bit smaller – from 66.6 cm in summer to 64.5 cm in the begging of autumn.

The largest fish in September: Ramons Mārtiņš, 102 cm pike from LVM Tērvete Reservoir. The largest fish in October: Normunds Ikomass, 78 cm pike from LVM Lake Kaņieris.

The ambassador of “Release the Mother!” and an angler, Māris Olte, explains that an early winter can positively affect exactly the angling of trophy size fish, because the food of pikes – small fish – in a cold weather tend to draw closer to shallow places. And carnivores are to be searched in places where shallow changes to deep, but different changes can also be minimal. Frequently, slow “animated” jointed wobblers, swimbaits and large plastic baits work the best in autumn. However, after looking at the results, the old saying is confirmed – the bigger the bait, the larger the fish. Both of the largest pikes caught in autumn have been caught by jerk fishing.

RESULTS

The first season of contest “Release the Mother!” is coming to a close. The best way to finish this season would be if participants of this competition and the Mammadaba Angling Championship, as well as other enthusiasts, would gather in December and would share their experience and would look back on the accomplished. It would also be a chance to receive their Honorary Fisherman’s (HF) badges for those who haven't received them yet. Information will follow. Good luck and see you by the waters!
