Jelgava Spīdola Gymnasium as one of the eight Mammadaba Embassies of school year 2016/2017 was invited to a one day adventure in the National Library of Latvia. In the Castle of Light, the 8th grade students shone with knowledge, wit and enthusiasm – as active youth should!
A separate room in the library was devoted to get to know the use of forest wood. Though, each of the students knew, that pages of books in the library are made from wood, they had to puzzle over some other products that we use every day. Students, from more than 20 various products, had to find one product that doesn’t contain wood. The task wasn’t simple, because it turns out that even soap bubbles and vanilla ice-cream contains particles of wood.
Girls are confident that veneer is a wooden product.
There was a lot to thinking and rethinking when looking for a product that does not contain wood. The correct answer is hidden very well.
The film about living in a house that is not built from natural raw materials can be compared to living in a plastic bag – environment that does not breathe and favours allergies. Young guys thought that through.
Students us only one of the senses – touch, and try to determine what wooden products are hidden in the box.
The correct equipment is selected so that it would be completely safe to go and perform young stand thinning. Let’s leave rain boots for mushroom pickers.
The new young forest stand thinning operator is ready to work!
Girls demonstrate what kind of equipment, due to safety reasons, must be used when going to work in forest (on the left) and what clothes can be picked for a stroll in forest on a sunny autumn day (on the right).
During the day, students also could put themselves in librarian shoes, which nowadays uses databases of books and materials in their work, and also had an opportunity to get a guided tour around the library building. As students admit – visual materials and effects help to receive the information, thus, the visit to national library was very exciting. Student Voldemārs approves the audiovisual reading room.
As teacher Vita Gaile, who participated in the tasks with the same enthusiasm as students, admits that it is very important for students to work by themselves, not only to listen and look at something from afar. In the time of information abundance people remember better everything if he himself has found and has done it practically. This is the only way to increase interest about processes around you.
At the end of the day students, happy and full of new knowledge, went back to Jelgava to continue to learn about forest, go to nature more often and to appreciate what forest can give.
