This year was the first time when in the framework of “Release the Mother!” anglers were invited to release the large fish back into the reservoirs managed by JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” so that they would grow bigger and make fish resources richer. It is too early to speak about the results, but responsible anglers are interested in it and it is planned to be continued next year.

In the first season on “Release the Mother!” 29 valid applications were received. The average length of the fish caught and released – 62.9 cm, but total length was around 20 metres. Slightly more than half of all contestant applications were received from Lake Kaņieris, five pikes both from Lake Lielauce and Tērvete Reservoir.

“Together we had a successful year of this contest – “Release the Mother!” in the lakes managed by “Latvia’s State Forests”. The goal was – to invite to think differently! Not only to catch but also to release the fish. The result of the initiative turns into honorary badges, and also receiving a title – Honorary Fisherman,” says Māris Olte, who, during the whole season, invited fishermen to go to lakes managed by JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” to enjoy the joy of angling and to participate in the contest “Release the Mother!”.

Three of the largest caught and released fish

Contestant who caught and released the largest fish in November –Juris Bārtulis – says that he releases large fish so that they would grow even larger and bring even bigger joy to some other angler. “I consider Gulbju Lake as “mine”, I have been angling here for at least 10 years. During these years there have been plenty of various catches,” tells Juris, who caught and released 69 cm long pike in the LVM Gulbju Lake.

The main prize of first season of “Release the Mother!” received Raimons Mārtiņš, who managed to take a movie worth video of releasing the fish. In September Raimons caught and released a 102 cm long pike in the LVM Tērvete Reservoir. “Catch and release” is my inner conviction. To participate in this contest was a true pleasure, thank you,” says Raimons.
