With the collection of waste paper and batteries, participants of the campaign are not only competing against each other, which educational institution will have collected and delivered the largest amount of secondary raw materials, but also are giving an important investment in promotion of environmental education in public, in improvement of waste sorting culture in Latvia, and also creates important base for municipal waste sorting implementation in educational institutions, and also in households.

Each year campaign “For Clean Latvia!” gathers thousands of children and youth from all over Latvia. Motivation to participate in the campaign is not only because of environmental awareness, but also because of the wonderful gifts for the most active secondary raw material collectors provided by “Zaļā josta” and main supporters of competition.  Moreover, all participants of the campaign, regardless of the results in competitions, receive a special invite to go to the grand winner award ceremony of the competition, where next to popular Latvian musicians’ performances will be different free of charge creative workshops, games and competitions.

Secondary raw material collection campaigns of “Zaļā josta” have become an annual tradition in educational institutions. In the previous school year more than 100 thousand children and youth from all over Latvia participated and they collected and gave to recycling more than 1049 tonnes of waste paper and 35 tonnes of used batteries. Thus, they have managed not only to give resources a new life but also saved a whole forest from being cut down, saved a remarkable amount of electricity, water and CO2, and also protected environment from potential pollution with heavy metals.
