Each of us have our special ways how to spend the dark winter evenings – some chooses to do sport activities, some read a book and listens in the crackling of wood in fireplace, but some go on idle walks to recover from a tense workday. With the approaching solstice time, when daylight can be seen for such a short time, Mammadaba journal encourages to draw inspiration for a colourful celebration of holidays in nature!
Weather appropriate clothes, warm drink in a thermos – a good start to go on an adventure from morning light till evening dusk. For example, in Liepāja region enjoy a walk in Dunika Bog. However, it is possible to catch peace at the calm sea in Vidzeme, walk the only forest museum in Northern Latvia and maybe even warm up a little at the LVM Vijciems Cone Drying Facility, where, using tools older than 100 years, seeds from new forest stands are being extracted.
Just like a reminder that every day can be a celebration, is the inspirational story from Jānis Jubalts, member of popular Latvian music band “Brainstorm”, about his favourite recreation places, amongst them also LVM Nature Park in Tērvete. Possibly that the active recreation experience of the musician will make journal’s readers to liven up and go on a holiday road trip.
After all the activities, one has to satisfy the hunger. In nature everything tastes better – TV show’s “Gatavo dabā!” host Renārs Purmalis is certain about that, offering not only delicious recipes, but also practical advises about how to make cooking in forest more comfortable and exciting.
Winter is the time of miracles and the most sincere celebration of year, when all family come together, creating new traditions. During this time we don’t forget about the most important Christmas component – the smell of Christmas tree. In some homes it will be brought from forest, but in some – growing in a pot so that after holidays it could continue to grow where planted.
It is never too late also to make new celebration customs or to return to ancient traditions, for example, making Christmas decorations and masks from natural materials. Reed and straw ornament making is an excellent way to spend time with family and children.
Mammadaba journal “Svētki mežā” (Celebration in forest) invites to go and celebrate winter!
