The bloom of bird cherries conformed not only with the beginning of colder and rainier weather, but also with the first competition of Mammadaba Open Angling Championship. So, on Saturday, at the boat base of Lake Kaņieris, surrounded by blooming bird cherries, eighteen teams stood in the opening parade. Five of them to participate in the first competition, but thirteen – to compete in the overall, which this year, as usual, will take place over six competitions.
After listening to the instructions, receiving identifications and calling out three hurrays to the supporters of the championship, participants rushed to get into lake. It can be said that sponsors like the course of championship and the number of them becomes larger year after year. The lead for awarding the winners of overall competition has been taken by “Salmo” Ltd. with “Lucky John” product line, they also provide encouragement prizes of championship. They will be helped by “Laivu depo” Ltd., “Dole Marine”, fishing shops “Gold Fishing”, “Pie Uģa”, journal “Copes lietas”, supported by Latvia Angling Sport Federation, but prizes for winners of competitions and for the largest pike in a competition are provided by managers of lakes – JSC “Latvijas valsts meži”.

It could be that the change in weather spoiled the hunger of fish, but it might have been some other unknown reason, even though, a day before competition, during the training, fish were much more active, but on the day of competition they were hard to be persuaded for hooking. I don't think that saying “who know how, he succeeds” was working this time, of course, you can’t get by without any skills in such conditions, but it can definitely be said that it comes with hard and intensive work. Men were working very hard, and the luckiest ones did succeed. Of course, the first to appear in the catch sheets were perches, but slowly the columns of pikes also were starting to be filled, and in the end almost all got some fish and the valuable points.

Mārtiņš Kampāns and Dmitrijs Kručinskis from team “DM Team” caught a seventy one centimetres long pike, focused on perches, caught five of them and the largest one being twenty four centimetres, they won the third place. However, Roberts Nille and Toms Dzintarnieks from “Cleanful” were very focused on catching only pikes. Their strategy paid off and Roberts with the help of Toms got into their boat a ninety four centimetres long pike, guys caught another one, a sixty five centimetres long pike, and with honour ranked in the second place, furthermore, Roberts received a prize for the longest pike. But the longterm participants of these competitions, Māris Smilga and Aivars Smilga from team “Čuš”, demonstrated great skills and sportsmanship, to three pikes they added dozen perches and one more time they proved that in such situation a success can be achieved.
