Most active waste paper collectors will be awarded in “Forest Days of Latvia”

This year 92720 children and youth from 388 educational institutions of all Latvia were participating in the secondary raw material collection contest “For Clean Latvia!” (Tīrai Latvijai!), collecting and delivering for recycling 939.545 tonnes of waste paper. On the May 24, the most active waste paper collectors will be awarded in the most important forestry event of the year – “Forest Days of Latvia” in Tērvete.

With the largest amount of collected waste paper in educational institution the first place has been taken by Ludza City Gymnasium, whose students have collected 47 t 900 kg of waste paper. Second place goes to Brenguļi Primary School with 17 t 581 kg of collected waste paper. However, the third place goes to Ķekava Secondary School, whose students have collected 16 t 713 kg of waste paper.

With the largest amount of collected waste paper per student in one educational institution the first place was taken by Brenguļi Primary School, whose students on average have collected 351.62 kg of waste paper per student. Second place was won by A. Spāģis Dunalka Elementary School. The third place went to preschool groups of Staicele Elementary School.

The most active students of Latvia – individual waste paper collectors of this year are: Undīne Una Adlere from Brenguļi Primary School collected 12.360 tonnes; Ričards Greidiņš from Svēte Elementary School collected 6.530 tonnes of waste paper; Elza Līberga from Ventspils Preschool Educational Institution “Varavīksne” collected 6.300 tonnes of waste paper; Kristers Miškāns from Ludza City Gymnasium collected 6.052 tonnes of waste paper; Marta Leimane from preschool group of Staicele Elementary School collected 4 tonnes of waste paper.

The contest “For Clean Latvia!” each year promotes development of waste sorting culture in Latvia, with the help of children not only improving the delivery of secondary raw materials for second use, but also raising awareness in society about the necessity to sort waste.

The aim of “Forest Days of Latvia” is to create special celebration and bring joy to each participant of the contest, who has been taking care of maintaining clean environment all through the year. In the celebration in Tērvete popular artists will perform, the awarding of the winners of contest will take place, and also multiple free-of-charge creative workshops, environmental education games and learning laboratories will be available.

We invite schools to register for the participation in the event until May 15 by filling application www.latvijasmezadienas.lv, to receive additional learning and informative materials during the event. Schools that are involved in different environmental education programmes, on the day of event will receive special prizes of appreciation from JSC “Latvijas valsts meži” – a gift card for class to a free-of-charge visit to LVM Nature Park in Tērvete that can be used until the end of year 2019!
