The Northern Latgale Forestry is located in eastern Latvia, spreading across 16 regions and covering such nature areas as the Vidzeme Highland, the Eastern Latvia Lowland and the Latgale Highland. Environmental diversity is ensured by pine and fir forests, black alder swamps. Latvia’s two largest lakes – Lake Lubāns and Lake Rāzna – are also found here. The most significant recreational objects are located in the vicinity of the largest cities. Ančupāni Forest Park lies near Rēzekne, the Drīksna Forest – close to Madona, the Old Park of Balvi – in the vicinity of Balvi.

Specially-protected nature territories – 38 nature reserves, five nature parks, three natural monuments and four protected landscapes – cover one-fourth of the forestry’s territory. The Southern Latgale Forestry abounds in magnificent lakes and rivers. Therefore this region of Latvia is called the “land of blue lakes.” The largest rivers: the Daugava and the Dubna, the most beautiful lakes: Rušons, Sivers, Riču, Laukezers, etc. Well-tended recreational areas and various attractions are easily available to the public.

Eastern Vidzeme forests are abundant in non-timber riches, tempting with berry and mushroom picking, hunting, orienteering and leisurely strolls. The main resources - landscapes, cultural-historical objects of interest, nature elements, rare animal and plant species. On the outskirts of Smiltene, three cycling trails are marked in the nearby forests, offering various degrees of difficulty. Meanwhile, seven well-tended swimming areas can be found on the shores of Lake Niedrājs. Several nature trails also located in the Eastern Vidzeme Forestry.

The Venta River and its tributaries run through the forestry. The Southern Kurzeme Forestry abounds in picturesque sceneries. The surrounding landscape is exclusively characteristic of Kurzeme – nearly untouched pine forests, long linear dunes (kangari) and narrow, marshy depressions (vigas), seashore bluffs, dunes and sandy beaches – excellent for uncrowded relaxation. Wonderful recreational sites have also been set up on the banks of many picturesque rivers - Abava, Irbe, Rinda, Roja, etc.
