Watch the lesser spotted eagles on Latvia’s State Forest online cameras!

13.04.2022 10:04

Earlier this week, both lesser spotted eagles have arrived in the Aizkuja district. First, a male with a frog in his beak entered the nest. It is a gift to the female of the little eagle, who eagerly swallowed it, following the mating in the nest. In the following hours, the nest was restored with fresh coniferous branches.

JSC Latvia’s State Forest has resumed the project “Birds and animals in the swamp” (“Putni un zvēri purvā”) to see the first lesser spotted to arrive. Intense arrival of little eagles at nesting sites takes place in mid-April, when the weather gets warmer and frogs start spawning, which is one of the most important source of food to the animals and is easily obtained in the spring. Before laying eggs in late April and early May eagles mate and build a nest. The most common way to see birds in the nest is in the early hours of the morning.

This year, JSC Latvia’s State Forest invites to watch the lesser spotted eagles in four online nests of two nesting districts.

In 2020, two young birds flew in the nest in Aizkuja, which is located in a birch tree, and two young birds flew out. In 2021, the lesser spotted eagles successfully nested in the nest. In turn, the lesser spotted eagles built a nest in 2018 and successfully nested in 2019. The following year, the lesser spotted eagles also nested in the nest, but the young eagle was carried by a northern goshawk. In 2021, the nest was not inhabited.

You can also follow the events in the two nests of the Big Island (Lielā sala), which are located in spruces, online. In 2019, eagles built a nest in one of the spruces and successfully nested. In 2021, eagles also nested here successfully. In the second spruce nest, lesser spotted eagles successfully nested in 2020, but a year later it was not inhabited. In March of this year, the nest tree was broken by the wind. Therefore, Latvia’s State Forests experts built an artificial nest next to the growing spruce, hoping for a successful return of the birds.
