Even though the extensive renovation work took place for almost two years, the significantly improved and nevertheless popular recreation area at the unique Lake Čertoks in Krāslava surroundings since early February is now available to visitors.

The tourism infrastructure installed by AS “Latvijas valsts meži” 10 years ago had served its time. Now, a new and spacious viewing platform that is also accessible to wheelchair users has been installed at the recreation area, overlooking the magnificent lake. Previously, there were only wooden footbridges in the area, but now gravel trails mark the routes. The parking lot infrastructure was also improved during the works - the area's surface and toilets were renovated.

Historically many hikers and nature lovers have wanted to walk around the unique Lake Čertoks. Taking into consideration this visitors’ wish, AS “Latvijas valsts meži” has freshly created an almost 700-meter-long walking trail around the lake. 555 meters are covered with gravel, but in the more humid areas, the trail is covered with wooden footbridges.

Since the territory is protected, all structures are built among trees, creating winding paths. In this unique place, visitors are invited to relax responsibly and not step off the paths during walks in order to preserve the protected landscape.

Čertoks or Velnezers (the Devil’s Lake) is a unique natural gem, as is the landscape around the lake. The lake was formed by underground waters washing out rocks and it is characterized by a 17-meter deep funnel-shaped lakebed. The lake water has a greenish color and its transparency can reach up to 8 meters.
