New viewing platform and wooden stairs on Pūsēnu Hill

07.02.2025 13:02

With the completion of construction work at the beginning of the year, Pūsēnu Hill in Kurzeme is once again open to visitors. The work has resulted in the installation of new wooden stairs and a viewing platform.

During the work, the previous wooden stairs were dismantled and new ones – more than 100 meters long – were installed on Pūsēnu Hill. In order to prevent the erosion of the dune caused by people moving along the edge of the dune and to reduce anthropogenic load, a new 32 m2 viewing platform was installed at the top of the hill. Besides the practical safety, it offers a beautiful view of the surroundings. Three benches have also been installed on the platform for relaxation.

Two years ago, a campfire site was renovated at the foothill of Pūsēnu Hill. In addition, a new table with two benches, a new toilet, as well as an information stand roof for a future information tablet, were installed.

Pūsēnu Hill, located in Jūrmalciems, Nīca parish, is a unique place because it is the highest dune on the Baltic Sea coast in Latvia. Its absolute height is impressive, 37 meters above sea level.

Pūsēnu Hill is located in the territory of the "Bernāti" nature park and is a protected geological and geomorphological natural monument.

Part of the dune was excavated in the 1970s–1980s, and the sand obtained was used to produce silicate bricks. The unexcavated part of the dune stretches for about 280 meters in length and about 260 meters in width. The unexcavated part of the dune presents a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape around the quarry.
