JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” congratulates the finalists of the international competition “Young People in European Forests” – the 2011/2012 Mammadaba Embassy - Ventspils Secondary School No.4 schoolchildren on a fine fifth-place finish among 11 national teams.
Nine of the finalist schools were specialized forestry schools. Therefore the achievements of Ventspils Secondary School No.4 schoolchildren - Maruta Roģe, Agnis Kaspars Frišenfelds and Roberts Bomis – are particularly delightful. Additional thanks to biology teacher Ineta Kraule who actively supported the schoolchildren. First place was won by the Technical Forestry High School Bruck /Mur (Austria). The 2nd Professional High School of Chalandri (Greece) finished second, the Baár-Madas Református Gimnázium (Hungary) – third.
In the finals, all participants had to answer fifty questions in English about European forests, their management, and prepare a presentation on “The Charm of Forests of My Country”. In their presentation, the Latvian s
choolchildren depicted an actual event – the visit of a Chinese exchange student in Latvia. The schoolchildren, on their way to Ventpils, informed the guest about various interesting facts regarding Latvia’s forests. Upon reaching Ventspils, the story continued - about the most interesting in the surrounding forests, the company “DendroLight Latvija” and environmental education at the Ventspils Secondary School No.4.
“Young People in European Forests” is the largest European youth competition about forests and forest management. Organized for the second time, the competition brought together 11 national teams from Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia. This year, the competition was held in Lahemaa Park’s Sagadi Manor in Estonia. Additional information: http://ypef.eu/ .
The competition’s national selection was organized by JSC “Latvia’s State Forests” in cooperation with Mammadaba embassies and held in May 2012. Nine schoolchildren from Mammadaba embassies (ages 13 to 19) could participate in it.
