On August 14, the Latvian Association of Castles, Palaces and Manors held its annual tournament of castle owners. Each year, the tournament brings together various castle representatives from near and far, who are willing to boast of their strength, agility, wit and, of course, castles. The association consists of more than 90 castles and manors, however, only the 12 most active ones applied for participation this year. This year’s tournament took place on the border between Zemgale and Kurzeme, and these provinces were also the most represented ones. Teams from Aizpute Region, Bīriņi Castle, Cesvaine Castle, the Vilce Manor, Vecmokas Castle, Garsene Manor, Varakļāņi Manor, Jaunpils Castle, Tāsis Manor, Rūmene Manor, Dundaga Castle, Durbe Castle and Tukums Castle Tower arrived to take part. Jaunmokas Castle representatives assumed the role of judges and ensured a sportsmanlike atmosphere. Not all castle owners are sports professionals. Therefore they could show off their talents and skills in orienteering in the castle and its park, angling, baking pancakes, sawing wood, recognizing different types of herbal tea, athletic events – football and croquet, etc.

The main prize was won by Rūmene Manor, the first two places – by neighbouring Jaunpils and Durbe castles. The third place was shared by Varakļāņi and Gārsene manors.

Castle owners are very active on weekends. Therefore the first weekdays are usually dedicated to relaxation and recreation. This is the day when they can meet with their colleagues, get to know each other in an informal atmosphere, discuss various professional matters and schedule future activities. Traditionally, the winner holds the next tournament, which means that we are off to Rūmene Manor next year!
